There is a version of Judd Zebersky‘s story that frames it as a simple career pivot. Lawyer becomes toy entrepreneur. That framing misses what actually happened. Zebersky did not walk from his law firm into an executive chair at a toy company. He walked onto factory floors in rural China, learned injection molding and rotocasting firsthand, and built his company on the operational knowledge most founders in consumer products never bother to acquire.

The Foundation Years

After earning his law degree from the University of Miami and running his own practice, Zebersky left for China in 1997 with a clear goal and limited resources. He spent months visiting factories across southern China, learning the mechanics of toy production from the people who did the actual manufacturing work. “I visited toy factories throughout the south of China and immersed myself in the manufacturing, design, and engineering of toys,” he said in a 2014 interview. That immersive approach became the operational philosophy of Jazwares.

The company Judd Zebersky built scaled through licensing deals with major franchises before acquiring Kellytoy in 2020 and inheriting Squishmallows. The brand’s explosive popularity on TikTok and its celebrity following transformed Jazwares’ public profile. By the time Judd Zebersky stepped down in March 2026, Jazwares employed roughly 1,400 people and operated in more than 100 countries.

Philanthropy as a Core Commitment

Zebersky wove charitable work into Jazwares from the beginning. Jazwares Cares donated millions of toys and maintained partnerships with organizations including Toys for Tots, Ronald McDonald House, and Make-A-Wish. The Zeberskys personally gave $2 million to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Those commitments were not separate from how Zebersky ran Jazwares. They were part of the same framework that made the company what it became over nearly three decades. See related link for additional information.
