Academy of Art University Covers The World In Beauty
With a vision of creating a place of learning and encouragement for aspiring artists, regardless of any prior experience, Richard S. Stephens, along with his wife, Clara, founded the Academie of Advertising Art in San Francisco in 1929. Stephens was editor of Sunset Magazine and a painter. Over the ensuing years the school underwent changes of name and broadening of courses to become today’s Academy of Art University, overseen by the founder’s granddaughter, Elisa Stephens.
Offering over 20 majors encompassing a wide range of interests, but all based in the arts, the Academy has both online and campus classes. Seeking to assist aspiring professionals in the arts, design and communication fields, the Academy of Art University offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as portfolio development and certificate programs.
Graduates of Academy of Art University are prepared to enter the art workforce as professionals in multiple areas. In particular, the fashion design department has been part of the NY Fashion Week event since 2005. This is a venue used to showcase new and aspiring talent in the fashion industry.
On September 9, 2017, the Academy of Art University participated for the 21st time at Skylight Clarkson Square. During this event, ten recent graduates, holding BFA and MFA degrees, debuted their new collections of both womenswear and menswear. The Academy has had students from all over the world from the beginning so it is no surprise that the fashion designers at this year’s event come from varied backgrounds, from mainland China to the coast of Maine. Each designer’s creations for fashion’s future were seen by their peers and professionals in the industry.
The staff of the Academy has, since inception, been professionals in the arts including Diane Baker, actress, Richard Hart, journalist and Tim McGovern, Academy Award-winning visual effects director. Notable alumni have been Asencio, figurative painter, Deanne Fitzmaurice, photographer, winner of a Pulitzer Prize in 2005 and Kara Laricks, fashion designer.
The Academy of Art University is the largest private, accredited, art and design university in the United States.
