The United Kingdom on Friday announced that trade between Israel and the UK increased two-fold during the tenure of outgoing ambassador Daniel Taub. There has also been increased cooperation regarding culture integration as well as an academic partnership”. Read a statement released by the Israeli Embassy last week. The statement outlined significant progressed that has been witnessed especially within the past four years.
In a recent British Israeli business awards event, Sajid Javid, the British Secretary of State for business, innovations, and skills said that the business relations between the two countries had reached a “golden age.”
According to the Israeli-Britain Chamber of commerce, more than 3,000 Israeli businesses have started operations in the UK. Javid approximated that the total annual bilateral trade was about $7 billion.
Daniel Taub who was also born in the UK became ambassador in 2011. He has also served in other international positions such as being the peace negotiator and once went to Northern Ireland with his Palestinian counterpart to assess the situation and make recommendations. He has been on the forefront to ensure that relations between the United Kingdom and Israel remain good despite the recent happenings back in Israel.
Several years back even before British’ largest student union opted to vote to adopt an Israeli boycott, Taub was quoted in an interview saying that he was concerned by the atmosphere in certain campuses.
He said that students should be allowed to express their views freely without fear of victimization regardless as to whether their views were in support of Israel or not. His views were misquoted by some people and prompted him to clarify the matter. For the four years he has served as Israeli Minister in the United Kingdom, Mr. Taub has promoted close interaction between the two countries as well as doubled trade. It has not yet been revealed who will take over from him.
The Israeli government has remained mum on the issue, but it is however expected that a new ambassador will be in office soon. When asked, the UK Secretary of State for foreign affairs said that he was also not privy to the information regarding the new person who would replace the outgoing ambassador. All in all, ambassador Taub leaves a great legacy behind.
